January 2007 Updates PDF Print E-mail

I tried to upgrade our forum software this morning, and have had several issues, the worst of which is that no one, including me, can log in. I'm aware of the problem and am trying (desperately) to find a solution. Please bear with me.

EDIT: I seem to have temporarily fixed the problem. A workaround and a slightly technical explanation follow.

WORKAROUND: Go to the forum and scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. Click on the "Forgot Password?" link and enter your username. You will be sent an email with a link in it to "reset" your password. Click on that link, enter your password (new or old, it doesn't matter) and click submit. Then try logging in on the next screen. That SHOULD solve the problem. If not, please let me know.

EXPLANATION: When SMF released the latest version of their forums, they changed the way the database stores the forum passwords. It's a stronger, more secure hash (encoding) than before, and the easiest way (I suppose) to re-hash the passwords is to have users re-enter them. Now, why they don't give users a notice stating this when the login fails, I don't know.

A second part of the problem is the forum theme I was using was interfering with the process somehow. I don't have a satisfactory explanation for this yet. Until I'm able to rebuild our theme, the default blue and white SMF theme will be in force. I know it doesn't match the rest of the site, but the forums are useable again. Hopefully.

EDIT 2 (Jan 25): I've fully upgraded all the software involved with the forum. Everything should work as expected, with the exception of the password problem mentioned above. Today I'll work on the theme and get it looking like the rest of the site.

Joomla 1.0.11 to 1.1.12 - Upgraded without a hitch. Why couldn't SMF be this easy?

Coppermine 1.4.8 to 1.4.10 - Upgraded.

WordPress 2.0 to 2.1 - Not yet.
